Anyhow, I wanted to offer the gang a little PSA. I've noticed a sad lack of emoticons floating around on the network when people are using text, and what's a text conversation without small collections of symbols to express your emotions in shorthand? A dull text conversation, that's what!

(´⌒｀) - the actual part of the face. it is oriented horizontally. the first parenthesis shows you where the face starts! the first dash is one eye, squinted sadly. then there is clearly a sadface. really ariadne, why must I explain this to you? the second dash is another squinted, sad eye. then there is the other side of the face.
(´⌒｀｡q) - of course we can't forget the little dot and the q. the q is the other hand, held up sadly! the little dot is a dot of sweat.

Let's do it again! it does have eyes, but they are rendered in a stylized manner.

you could regard that icon as a derivative of this crying expression: T_T in this case, the capital Ts represent the eyes. the horizontal bar on the T represents the eye, squinted nearly shut. the vertical line of the T represents tears descending from the eye. the underscore is the mouth of course.

in the example you give, the parentheses of course represent the edges of the face. the tiny circles are the cheeks. ┰ of course represents the eye, just as the T does. it seems that this person is weeping very ruefully, as they are smiling through their tears: ω

or perhaps they are weeping because they have testicles grafted onto their face.

Although, you know, ironically in this case, some ancient Gaelic sects did utilize genital displays as a method of warding off the evil eye. I'm not sure what they would have to say about the weeping one.

I can't say I'm familiar with the belief systems of many ancient Gaelic sects. what did that belief stem from? - also, I suggest in this case that a particularly potent evil eye caused a genital display to sprout right from where this person's face would otherwise be. tragic.

ヾ(´A｀)ノﾟ This, and several like it, are listed as being "mellow," but it seems to me to have many of the signifiers of unhappiness. The slashes, as you said above, for the eyes, and the mouth appears to be downturned in agony, the hands thrown up in despair...

I was thinking of it as portraying someone lying down with their arms thrown up in relaxation, their face slack and eyes nearly closed. but you do make a good point. perhaps it does read more "sinner being cast into hell" than "sinner relaxing in a hammock."

Fear and shock aren't necessarily very far apart are they? of course this is subjective to some degree but you see the first one is flailing its arms around

this might be a little difficult to go over if you aren't familiar with the visual conventions of anime or other forms of sequential art. nevertheless I'll take a crack at it.

∑(O_O；) - the whole face. we're already familiar with how parenthesis are used to delineate the boundaries of the face!
∑ - the part that's giving you trouble, this isn't actually a part of the face at all. it's being used to portray "shock lines" which are used in conjunction with character expressions to indicate that said character has just had a jolt of one kind or another.
