Howdy to all you Bargites. ヘ(°¬°)ノ Or should I call you Bargians? Do we even have a name for the collective population here? It's rather sequestered otherwise. Inmates and wardens are all in the same boat after all. [Pardon his pun.]

(^v^)

Anyhow, I wanted to offer the gang a little PSA. I've noticed a sad lack of emoticons floating around on the network when people are using text, and what's a text conversation without small collections of symbols to express your emotions in shorthand? A dull text conversation, that's what!

I have a whole lexicon for everyone's perusal. I've even gone to the trouble of separating them by emotion.

Enjoy, Bargites. ( ノ^ω^)ノ゚

I'll see if I can find it, then.

ヾ(´A`)ノ゚ This, and several like it, are listed as being "mellow," but it seems to me to have many of the signifiers of unhappiness. The slashes, as you said above, for the eyes, and the mouth appears to be downturned in agony, the hands thrown up in despair...
zeitgeists: (what.)

[personal profile] zeitgeists 2012-05-24 10:06 am (UTC)(link)
I was thinking of it as portraying someone lying down with their arms thrown up in relaxation, their face slack and eyes nearly closed. but you do make a good point. perhaps it does read more "sinner being cast into hell" than "sinner relaxing in a hammock."
themountie: (on duty)

[personal profile] themountie 2012-05-24 10:32 am (UTC)(link)
Which is not a very mellow image, indeed.

Now, what's the difference between ヽ(゚Д゚)ノ and (」゜ロ゜)」? One is meant to convey fear, and the other, shock. Also, what does the sigma portray?
themountie: (serious face)

[personal profile] themountie 2012-05-25 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
And I suppose you could argue that the square mouth is slightly less downturned than the Д, indicating less of a negative response...

Did you say the sigma is an open mouth? But ∑(O_O;) this expression, for example, already seems to have a mouth as well.
zeitgeists: (keep it up...)

[personal profile] zeitgeists 2012-05-25 08:20 am (UTC)(link)
The sigma is an open mouth in some contexts! that emoticon is used to express shock correct?

this might be a little difficult to go over if you aren't familiar with the visual conventions of anime or other forms of sequential art. nevertheless I'll take a crack at it.

∑(O_O;) - the whole face. we're already familiar with how parenthesis are used to delineate the boundaries of the face!
∑ - the part that's giving you trouble, this isn't actually a part of the face at all. it's being used to portray "shock lines" which are used in conjunction with character expressions to indicate that said character has just had a jolt of one kind or another.
themountie: (you don't say)

[personal profile] themountie 2012-05-25 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I see. And the semi-colon is a hand?
zeitgeists: (slate blue eyes and a smile.)

[personal profile] zeitgeists 2012-05-25 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, not in this case. it represents sweat.
themountie: (rly?)

[personal profile] themountie 2012-05-26 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
Why is it sweating?
themountie: (UM.)

[personal profile] themountie 2012-05-26 10:21 am (UTC)(link)
It usually requires a fair and relatively sustained amount of adrenaline to cause a physical reaction like that. Or a panic attack, I suppose.
zeitgeists: (he's got half a heart sometimes.)

[personal profile] zeitgeists 2012-06-02 09:50 am (UTC)(link)
You've never watched anime, have you? Artists don't obey the laws of physics or biology very strictly, dear.
